This series absolutely shattered me into pieces. Going into it of course i was anticipating some sort of pain given the intense reactions that were circulating on basically every single social media platform, but i was absolutely not ready to have my heart broken.

I’ve never seen the original film with Anne Hathaway, or read the book before so i guess i was going into it completely blind. Expecting a rom-com series with some painful moments, but i was entirely and irrevocably, wrong.
Ambika mod as em was such a perfect casting. It was so heartening as a brown woman to see a leading female brown love interest on my screen. Something i never really had the opportunity to experience i was growing up but grateful that so many little brown girls now do. Leo woodall, well every scene he was in you felt just consumed in it. He engaged with every single scene so well, especially each time he broke down and you honestly felt his pain and heartache through the scene. The connection that was formed between us as the audience and the characters was immense.
With each episode focus on a different heart, the build up their journeys both singularly as well as together is so beautifully executed. Time is precious, everlasting but also easily passed. You feel the pain of all the time they lost together, but also understand that it’s that time apart on their own journeys that allowed them to truly understand their love for each other and be at a place in their lives at which they could finally give everything to that love they had and felt.

One of my favourite scenes was the one where em sees the printed out plan of points that dex wanted to talk about in his wedding speech. She says that she wants him to include something he has written on the sheet, which was “we grew up together” it’s so simple yet so so sentimental and perfectly captures their relationship. They learned, they fought, they laughed, they cried, both alone and together they grew up and achieved their happiness together. It also ties into another scene i loved, which was Em’s speech at Tilly’s wedding. It's one of the great cosmic mysteries. “How it is that someone can go from being a total stranger to being the most important person in your life.” They loved each other so so much, their connection was so beautiful and profound and just expertly portrayed by Ambika and Leo. Two strangers that happened to bump into each other on their last day of university after graduating at a party, to becoming the foundation of each other’s stories of their lives.

Finally, the montage at the end… when i tell you the soundtrack combined with that montage of their memories absolutely broke me. I sobbed like a baby in my bed, so glad i decided to finish the last episode at home instead of trying to watch it all during my free period at university. All of their kisses played together, with the song in the background and Dexter walking away rips your heart into pieces. So many emotions it makes you feel, i felt heartbroken at the fact that they didn’t get their happy ending, destroyed at how Dex was left alone, but also satisfied in some way that memories of the people you love will never leave you. Yes you feel pain, but you also feel a sense of comfort at the fact that you have had the opportunity of having this person in your life. I felt this was perfect for Em and Dex. Lucky to have someone who you loved so immensely and deeply in your life, no matter how long for because that love is rare.
Watch one day. It’ll destroy you, but in the best way possible.
